Tanzer Mixtape

Melbourne composer and chanteuse Tanzer is preparing to release her debut EP Four Love Songs in a few weeks – Monday May 16th to be exact. We asked her to create a mixtape to tide us over until the EP release.

She sent us five excellent tracks and added, “Melbourne is wild!”. Take a listen to her selections below.

Sex On Toast – ‘Doubt’
I’m biased as I directed this video/am in cahoots with several members, but their cheek, flamboyance and mind-blowing attention to detail floor me every show. All their songs are terrific but I’ve got a soft spot for this as it’s super weird and super naughty (and has a bassoon interlude) which is just so great.

Jaala – ‘Double Dutch’
Cosi is a star, this whole band is wonderful, and the modern twist on sweeping love stories is right up my alley.

GL – ‘Grip’
I’m new to this band but I’m already convinced that Ella Thompson is a national treasure. I saw her other perfect band Dorsal Fins recently and they played two consecutive Wings covers – it’s love.

Ainslie Wills – ‘Drive’
Ainslie is intense, commanding and flawless, and gives me a Joni Mitchell-meets-early-90s-femme-pop vibe here – I was quite overwhelmed when I heard this for the first time (still am). Everything she does is immensely beautiful.

Frida – ‘Slowly’
This band leaves me spellbound every time I see them. Classy, hypnotic, gorgeous, I could eat this up with a spoon.

Tanzer launches her debut EP on Saturday May 28th at the Toff In Town with Sugar Fed Leopards, Karen From Finance, The Huxleys, Benjamin Hancock, James Andrews, Dandrogyny and Sex On Toast DJs. Tickets here.
