Dick Diver are kicking massive goals at the moment. Their second album Calander Days is a great little slice of Australiana and this show is the second at the Corner this tour after a sold out gig that was reportedly so packed you had to crowd surf to the bar.
Lost Animal were the second openers, and while their set was quite entertaining the tracks from the album didn’t stand up as well as they could have, which is a risk any band who uses a laptop is faced with. It was a divisive set with some people (including awful drunk hecklers that got booted out) dancing along happily and others commented that they didn’t enjoy it all.
Dick Diver are charmingly shambolic. There’s instrument swapping, Monster swilling and more jangly pop than you can shake a stick at. The relaxed tunes on their albums translate well to the stage, with the exception of “Boys” the most ill-fitting track on Calendar Days which fell completely flat. But things picked up again quickly and everyone’s favourite tribute to the dole “New Start” rounded out the second half of the set.
It’s easy to see why Melbourne has falled
head over heels for these guys and I wouldn’t be surprised if they sell out the Corner a few times on their next tour.
