Saskwatch are at the forefront of Melbourne’s soul scene and have played everywhere from Golden Plains to a residency at Cherry Bar.
We caught up with Liam for a quick chat about Melbourne’s soul scene, Northside Records and sharing band members.
Can you tell us a bit about your new album?
Sure. We recorded it to tape earlier this year at Woodstock Studios in Melbourne, with our friend Cam Trewin. We had a lot of fun.
What would you consider the band’s greatest achievement so far?
Yeah totally. I never thought i’d have an LP of our original songs so that is pretty incredible.
you guys are the first band to be released on Northside Records, which is all kinds of exciting. How did that come about?
Well i’ve been going to Northside ever since Nic (our trumpet player) showed me it 5 years ago and in that time we’ve gotten to know Chris (head honcho), and he’s become a really
big supporter of the band’s progress. Gradually the idea was floated and it just kind of happened. I never thought i’d have a record out with my favourite record store so that’s really amazing for me.
How do you feel about the current state of the Soul scene in Melbourne?
The scene in general in Melbourne is pretty amazing. You have so many good bands like The Cactus Channel and Clairy Browne, but also King Gizzard, The Harpoons, Twerps, The Bluebottles, Grizzly Jim Lawrie. It’s all soul music though yeah?
I know that a few of you play in other bands as well as Saskwatch, is there ever a clash when it comes to touring/recording commitments?
Yeah it’s been a bit rough lately but we’ve made it work. We were just in Europe with Saskwatch and Eagle & the Worm (the other band), and it wasn’t looking like it would work out but it was all good. I finished the Saskwatch tour and started the Eagle one the next day.
Any upcoming gigs we should know about?
We’re touring the album this
Sept / Oct – check out saskwatch.com.au for deets.
What are your favourite venues to play in Melbourne?
Apart from Cherry, The Corner (we play there Fri Oct 5) pumped.
Who are your favourite Melbourne bands?
Little Red, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, The Harpoons, Grizzly Jim Lawrie, Daniel Merriweather, The Cactus Channel, The Bluebottles, Clairy Browne, Tessa & The Typecast, The Messengers, The Greasers, Oscar + Martin, Twerps and plenty more I can’t think of right now…
