A Chat With..Magic America

Psychedelic rock band Magic America are currently touring the east coast in support of their debut EP. Before the tour hits Victoria we had a chat to Andrew Stapleton.

You dropped your debut EP last month, how’s the response been so far? It’s been great so far. It’s always nice to hear positive feedback on something you’ve worked so hard on!

Speaking of the EP, you recorded it partly at Soundpark Studios and in a home studio. Do you think it’s important for bands to be self sufficient and be able to record themselves? Definitely. Being able to record demos and experiment with mixing in your own time is crucial. I also think it is very important to work with people who are keen and who you trust musically. Dave Turner was that for us, mixing the EP with him was actually a lot of fun.

You’ve played two dates so far on your EP tour, how’d the shows go? They’ve been great. We just played the Gold Coast and it was mental! we were chatting to a few people at our hostel before the show and after a few beers we ended up bringing about 20 of the backpackers to the gig in the hostel mini-bus. It was a pretty loose show.

The band draw from a range of influences – what albums are you currently listening to? We’re currently really digging the new Royal Headache album and GUM’s new song “Anesthetized Lesson” is pretty sweet.

Can you tell us about your favourite Melbourne bands? Redspencer and Immigrant Union are our favourites at the moment. Redspencer are really chill pop rock and awesome blokes too.

And Melbourne venues? The Grace Darling, The Curtin Bandroom and Ding Dong Lounge are all solid venues and one of the reasons we chose The Curtin for our EP launch on October 9. Plus, they have kick ons after the bands finish.

The hometown launch is happening on October 9 at The Curtin, it’s a co-headline show with White Bleaches. Have you the two bands played on the same bill before? What can we expect? It’ll be our first show together. We’ve been digging their new tunes and have been following them for a little while now, so thought we’d be a perfect match for a show and decided we’d have a joint launch and make it a big party.

Thanks for your time! Thanks!
